Rawlings Catchers Gear vs Wilson  Catchers Gear

Wilson and Rawlings are two brands of catchers gear that have a lot in common than most people realize. These two titans in the sporting goods community have been making catchers gear for along time. Both brands design some very attractive looking catchers gear and both brands are known to be comfortable to wear. However, each brand also bring a couple of unique features to the table that a buyer shouldn‘t overlook.

We often tell people that they should buy catchers gear that suits their style and body shape. We‘ll compare and contrast both Wilson and Rawlings catchers‘ gear to highlight the differences between both of them.

Take the sting out of catching, check out our article about the PalmGuard.

Wilson Catchers Gear Pricing Compared to Rawlings

Rawlings catchers gear is priced around the same as Wilson‘s. There isn‘t much of a difference, though Wilson gear does tend to be slightly less than Rawlings in a general sense.  Pricing does vary depending on the gear you choose. By and large, you won‘t need to choose one over the other because of lower or more competitive pricing policies.

Color Selection Across Both Brands

Rawlings catchers gear tends to be available in more colors as compared to Wilson‘s gear. Take the Rawlings Adult Velo 2.0,for instance, which is available in seven colors like black/orange, navy/scarlet, navy/white, purple/white, scarlet/white, etc. The Intermediate Velo 2.0 is available in eleven different colors.

Now compare that to the similarly priced and almost identical looking Wilson C1K NOCSAE, which is only available in four colors, i.e., black, navy, royal, and scarlet.  The Wilson C1K does have more colors available (7) in adult and intermediate sizes but this equipment is not NOCSAE certified.

So, if it is more colors or a wider selection of colors that you‘re looking for, Rawlings is a better choice. That said, the color selection does vary, but in general, you‘ll get more colors from which to choose with Rawlings.

How do you measure for correct size of Rawlings catchers gear or Wilson ? Check out these three quick videos about the chest protector, leg guards and of course the helmet.

Size Selection

Rawlings and Wilsons have catchers gear for adults and intermediates alike. The exact sizes across both brands are also the same. However, they can easily be adjusted so that they offer more protection and comfort.

In terms of sizes, you should be able to find one that fits you the best, regardless of which brand you prefer.

Wilson does make an MLB series that you can purchase your favorite big league teams catchers equipment.  This catchers gear includes helmet, chest protector and shin guards.  This gear is made for kids ages 5-7 and 7-12.  Click photos below for more information.

Protection and Durability

Rawlings catchers gear is designed with ventilation, thick padding, and the use of special materials that prevent damage and protect the wearer. The excellent ventilation systems wicksup sweat quickly, which makes their catchers gear cooler and more comfortable to wear for extended periods of use.

Much of Wilson‘s catchers‘ gear is made to NOCSAE standards. The gear has a glossy finish and adjustable straps. There is also extra protection across the chest with thick padding. However, while the use of ABS plastic helps to improve protection and looks good in the process, it is easily scratched. Most users have discovered that a single game could end up making brand new gear looking scuffed. So, the Wilson catchers gear will look worn out more quickly than the Rawlings catchers gear.

Final Verdict

Rawlings catchers gear and Wilson catchers gear are some of the best out there. However, they are equally matched in all departments except for color. If you want more color options, then Rawlings is your best bet. Furthermore, they don‘t end up looking scuffed after a few seasons. That‘s why most people may prefer to opt for the Rawlings‘ catchers gear as compared to Wilson.
