who was born and raised in Canada elected to give up playing hockey to turn his attention full time to playing baseball. The move payed off for him as he pitched for the Canada Junior national team. His strong performance in high school earned him a shot on the University of California Team. Despite the commitment, Soroka heard his name called during the 2018 MLB draft with the 28th pick. Despite some question marks on being able to sign him, the Braves took a chance and the pick has now came back to reward them in just a few seasons.

After signing his rookie deal, Soroka spent time at both of the Braves rookie ball teams pitching to a 0-2 record with a 3.18 earned run average while striking out 37 batters over just 34 innings of work. Soroka would spend 2016 in A going 9-9 with a 3.02 earned run average before moving up to double A in 2017. In 17, Soroka continues to show his poise pitching to a 2.75 earned run average ver 26 stars while striking out 125 batters across just 153.2 total innings.

In 2018, after a strong stretch of success in the Minors, Soroka earned a call up to the Braves roster in May. After posting a 2-1 record and a 3.51 earned run average over his first 25 2/3 innings of work, a shoulder injury in his throwing shoulder shut the Braves young star down for the rest of the season. The same shoulder injury would show up to start the 2019 season forcing Soroka to miss spring training and a delay to joining the Braves starting rotation.

Just a few weeks later after opening day, Soroka was called up join the Braves rotation a move that rewarded club. After his first three starts in 2019, Soroka pitched to a 1.62 earned run average while striking out 21 batters over 16.2 innings of work while posting a 2-1 record. The success continued in May as the Braves prospect allowed just three earned runs over 34 innings of work while improving his record to 5-1.
Soroka didn’t slow down through June picking up four more wins while helping the Braves win all six contests he started in the month. The hot start and the impressive 9-1 record and a 2.13 earned run average helped Soroka land on the National League All-Star roster. The honor gave the Braves the chance to become the first team in MLB history to have two 22 year or younger players make the All-Star team (Ronal Acuna Jr was also named to the team).
Key Fact: The All-Star honors in 2019 allowed Soroka to become the youngest Atlanta Braves pitcher to earn a spot in the Mid Summer classic.
Down the stretch, Soroka would finish the season with a 13-4 overall record and 2.68 earned run average over 29 starts. The strong season landed Soroka on the radar of most teams around baseball as well as the baseball writers. Soroka would finish sixth on the Cy Young voting and second in the Rookie of the Year voting.
