As a kid growing up McNeil focused on playing baseball, basketball and golf before a bad outing in the 2009 US Junior Amateur Golf Championship leading him to turn away from his dream of becoming a pro golfer. In his senior season, McNeil decided to play baseball at Nipomo High School where he put together a dominating performance on the diamond finishing with a .446 batting average helping to land him a college scholarship.

After committing to Cal State Northridge to play college baseball, a decision to make a coaching change opened the door for McNeil to change his commitment to Long Beach State to continue his baseball career. The move proved wise as he finished his junior season with the team batting .348 helping him earn a spot on the All-Big West first team while helping his name be recognized by MLB scouts. The performance on the field landed him a dream to play professional at the next level as the Mets selected him in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB draft.

Once being drafted by the Mets, McNeil started his playing career with the Kingsports Mets in the rookie league. Over 47 games, McNeil proved he could hit posting a .329 batting average over 164 at bats in 2013. Over the next three seasons, McNeil traveled up through the Mets minor league organization before posting a .342 batting average and 19 home runs in 2018 helping earn his promotion to the big league roster.

Once joining the Mets roster, McNeil played a valuable role filling in at the second base position for 54 of his 63 games with the club. Over those 63 games, McNeil posted a .329 batting average to go with 11 doubles, six triples and three home runs while driving in 19 runs. The strong rookie performance earned him a sixth place spot on the 2018 NL Rookie of the Year voting.

Now showing his potential, McNeil earned himself a spot on the active MLB roster for the 2019 MLB season. During his sophomore season, McNeil didn’t disappoint finishing the season with 38 doubles, 23 home runs and 75 runs batted in. The strong start to the season helped earn the Mets utility infielder a spot on the 2019 NL All-Star team. In addition to hitting, McNeil played a key role in the field finding time in left field (71 games played), right field (42 games played), second base (37 games played) and third base (31 games played) while switching positions in game when needed.
