The 2020 MLB off-season provided a ton of excitement with a stellar list of top tier players finding new homes. One of those top tier free agents finding a new home was the former Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros All-Star starter Gerrit Cole. Cole agreed to a nine year deal worth $324 million dollars this offseason with the New York Yankees. The California Native started to make his baseball dream a reality as a junior pitching for the Orange Lutheran High School pitching after demonstrating a 94 mph fast ball before touching 96 mph in a prep school showcase event. Cole turned that success into a huge senior season allowing just a .47 earned run average over 75 innings while striking out 121 batters and recording a 8-2 record. The success helped Cole earn honors as the 17th overall best prospect for the 2008 MLB draft. In addition, Cole earned himself a spot on the USA high school baseball team.

With the success and the hype, the New York Yankees selected Cole with the 28th pick in the upcoming MLB draft. Unfortunately, the two sides could not come to a deal and Cole elected to join the ULCA Bruins on his scholarship. Over the next three seasons with the Bruins, Cole compiled a 21-20 overall record while striking out 376 batters and posting an average ERA of 3.39. This success helped lead the Bruins to the College World Series in 2010.

All that success helped land Cole at the top of the 2011 MLB Draft after the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him with the top overall pick. The former first round pick dominated the minors while moving from Class A ball in 20120 to the Class AAA league by the end of the season. Despite the success, Cole found himself in the minors to start the season before getting the call on June 11, 2013 to make his MLB Debut. Gerrit Cole finished his first season in the Majors with a 10-7 record and a 3.22 earned run average before making a dominate start for the club in the 2013 NL division series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Key Fact: Gerrit Cole is married to Brandon Crawford of the San Francisco Giants sister Amy Crawford who is also a former UCLA Bruin softball player.
Cole would go on to pitch for the Pirates till the end of 2017 MLB season, in his five season with the Pirates the former Bruin went 59-42 with a solid 3.50 earned run while striking out 734 batters. With the Pirates headed in the wrong direction, Cole was traded to the Houston Astros before the 2018 MLB Season. The move would give the Astros a dominate rotation while helping the Astros take home the American League West division. Cole finished the season with a 15-5 record and an MLB best 12.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
